Advice for First-Year Students:
There are many things you can do to improve and enhance your college experience, but here I am going to give you a simple piece of advice that will make your life easier. Take it slow. Don't over work yourself and try your best to enjoy yourself throughout these years. They fly by quicker than it took you to read this paragraph.
Hobbies/Interests:
My hobbies are playing video games, playing hacky sack, many types of sports, and drawing. An interest of mine is to study the human brain and the nervous system.
Undergraduate College:
Arts, Culture and Humanities
Name:
Alexa Albam
Major:
Marine Vertebrate Biology
Hometown:
New City, NY
Advice for First-Year Students:
My advice for first year students is to be open to everything and try to get out of your comfort zone. Being social, active, and putting yourself out there to try new things and make new friends will help you in so many ways. Not only will it make you happier and make adjusting to college easier, it will make you less stressed which means you can do better in school. Your new friends might even be able to help you study! Even if something doesn't seem like it will interest you, there is no harm done by giving it a try.
Hobbies/Interests:
I love drawing, singing, reading a good book, being outside, doing volunteer/charity work, and pretty much anything related to science- especially when it comes to the ocean!
Undergraduate College:
Arts, Culture and Humanities
Name:
Alyssa Golik
Major:
Undeclared
Hometown:
Rocky Point, NY
Advice for First-Year Students:
Don't be afraid to put yourself out there! Everyone is overwhelmed stepping onto this campus and it becomes very easy to just sit back and watch everything happening, but you have to make things happen for yourself. As cliché as this is, be yourself, keep an open mind, and do the best that you can. SBU is a tough school, but you made it and you can handle this.
Hobbies/Interests:
I spend a lot of time in my Jeep blasting the radio and singing off-key. Concert goer. Beach bum. Closet poet. Aspiring world traveler. Foodie. Painter. Feminist. Bibliophile.

You're able to get free software, tutoring, recreation center access, and more!

Name:
Christina Rajbahar
Major:
Biomedical Engineering
Hometown:
Bellerose, NY
Advice for First-Year Students:
My advice for first year students is to take advantage of the tutoring resources on campus. There is a lot of opportunities for free tutoring that could really save you a struggle. A good way to make sure you stay on top of your work is to schedule a weekly tutor through the Academic Success and Tutoring Center for each one of your difficult courses. It's best to sign up right at the beginning of the semester before all the slots fill up. In the long run it helps you to keep up in your classes and not get overwhelmed.
Hobbies/Interests:
Working out, Running, Wrestling (real wrestling), Being Active, Poetry, Music, Binge watching good TV.

Advice for First-Year Students:
Remember to take some time for yourself to explore your environment and who you are. College is about discoveries and learning and there are a lot more opportunities for that than you would think :)
Hobbies/Interests:
You could undoubtedly find me singing or dancing everywhere I go or sparking up a conversation with a stranger. Music means the world to me and I'm down to jam any time but I also dig creating art with any medium. But studying is just as important and honestly fun for me so if you ever want to have a study jam hit me up for that too! Finally I'm a member of many groups here on campus like Pocket Theater and the LGBTA. If you ever need anything don't be shy to ask me any time!
Undergraduate College:

Major:
Biology, Pre-Vet track.
Minor:
Theatre Arts
Hometown:
Dunstable, MA
Advice for First-Year Students:
Meet new people! Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and meet a new friend. Whether it is at an event, club, or in class, be social. This can be a life saver when you need help with homework or want to create a study group for a big exam. Or it's a Saturday night and you have nothing to do- go out with friends, whether you are a resident or commuter. Commuters, don't immediately go home after your classes. Residents, go to hall council, it's a great way to get involved. Also make free time to hang out with friends- college is not entirely about school work.
Hobbies/Interests:
I really enjoy working with animals, which is why I wish to become a veterinarian. I own two dogs and I horseback ride. I hope to be volunteering at an animal shelter this summer. Besides animals, I also have a love for the arts. I love to draw and paint, listen and play music, as well as perform in theatrical shows. I joined Pocket Theatre to become more involved with theatre on campus.

Don't stress yourself out too much. This is college, you're supposed to have a great time while also having a good education in the process. While the test and classes might be hard make sure you take time out of studying and work to enjoy yourself. Join a club that interest you, or try something totally new here. Your college experience is what you make of it so make the most of it.
Hobbies/Interests:
My hobbies are photography, reading, and I love music from pretty much all genres except country. I play the violin and guitar, though not very well. I love going to the REC to de-stress. I love watching movies and sometimes it feels like Netflix knows me better than I know myself.

Advice for First-Year Students:
While I believe that attending classes and studying for exams are important don’t forget to socialize. Join clubs and attend events, you will make friends and learn things that you won’t learn in class. I am on the Ballroom Dance Team and practices take my mind off of studies and deadlines, which is nice. Most of my closest friends are on the team. Put yourself out there college is what you make of it. No one is going to force you to make friends. It is up to you to make the best of your college experience by taking advantage of everything Stony Brook has to offer.
Hobbies/Interests:
Hi! My name is Jenny and I’m from Long Island. I was born in China and moved here when I was three. I speak Mandarin and Fuzhounese. English is my third language. Advice for First-Year Students:
As a First-Year student, you should try to find your footing. It might take a while, but college is the time to explore your options, discover your passions, and do what makes you happy. Take a class you normally wouldn't take but really want to. Join a club that makes you WANT to go to their meetings and events every week. Find friends with similar interests and have a good time. Focus on grades, but don't overwork yourself to the point of exhaustion. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Enjoy and make the most of these four years, because they'll be over before you know it.
Hobbies/Interests:
I like to read fantasy novels, make friendship bracelets, act, sing, and watch movies (especially Harry Potter) and eat popcorn in my dorm room on the weekends. I'm a member of Dumbledore's Army and the Actor's Conservatory on campus. I am heavily involved with Seawolves Against Cancer and was in charge of planning Relay For Life at Stony Brook in April 2015.

Be prepared to work for your grade but don't forget that this is the time to try new things and expand your horizons.
