Advice for First-Year Students:
The best advice that I can give you is to explore. College is where you go to get an education, but it's also where you go to truly find yourself. You may already know the kind of career you want, but take a class in a subject completely different from what you're going for. You may find a new passion or hobby, maybe even a new career! And if you ever start to feel lost, talk to people. Talk to your RA, RHD, TA, Professor, and talk to us Fellows. Remember, college is a learning experience!
Hobbies/Interests:
I really enjoy playing video games. I'm more of a PC gamer. I love fishing. I enjoy playing board games with my friends. (Cards Against Humanity, Monopoly etc.) I really want to get into woodworking once I find the time.

Advice for First-Year Students:
Make the most of your time here! You get what you put in, so get involved and put yourself out there. It's important to have fun, but also remember that you're a student first and foremost. Finding that balance is key.
Hobbies/Interests:
I'm a huge bookworm, so I love reading in my spare time. If I'm not doing that, then I'm most likely listening to music and discovering new sounds that I like. I also enjoy going on walks with friends on campus, since Stony Brook is so big, it's fun to explore it!

Advice for First-Year Students:
My first and foremost piece of advice to first-year students would be don't panic! I spent my first semester at Stony Brook panicking about my grades and professor's office hours that I didn't give myself time to socialize with people outside my building. Give yourself time to talk to other people! An equally important part of your first semester is making connections with other students and sometimes balancing academia and social life can be difficult but it becomes easier as you go through the semester so don't fret! In your second semester, you'll have a better handle of everything -- so relax and breathe!
Hobbies/Interests:
I love listening to music. I have a varied taste in music genres -- they range between indie pop to old Spanish ballads. I love reading fictional books; when it gets warmer, you may find me sitting outside with a book in my hands. I love watching Netflix on rainy days and relaxing with friends whenever I get the chance.

Advice for First-Year Students:
College is what you make it. This is going to be one of the most repeated phases you're going to hear in your college career and for the most part it is true. However, I think what really should be said is that you don't need to know everything and that it's alright to make mistakes. You shouldn't be afraid of not knowing but you shouldn't let that stop you from asking for help. There's no shame in asking for help and it's the first step to personal growth.
Hobbies/Interests:
I'd like to think that I'm a normal person with normal hobbies and interests. I like to hang out with friends and watch movies. I enjoy reading and will go on long google tangents of just looking up things. I enjoy sketching and just relaxing (which is hard to come by).

Coming into college is a big transition. You'll be given the opportunity to meet so many new people and explore your interests. My advice is to go out and chase those opportunities! My advice would be, don't be so scared of college it may seem intimidating, but really it's not bad. Also if you have trouble with a class use office hours they help so much, and don't be nervous about talking to a professor you are supposed to be able to talk to them if you need help.
Hobbies/Interests:
I love winterguard, Disney, musicals, classic hits music, and puzzles. I am an awesome puzzler. Also I love movies, especially disney, superhero, classics like Ghostbusters and Back to the Future, and Harry Potter of course!

Advice for First-Year Students:
Coming to Stony Brook, is like coming from a fish bowl into the big sea. It will be overwhelming, challenging, and you may feel like you don't belong. But the best part of this experience is that you create your own destiny. You have full control over your story now. You choose what will happen from here on out. By picking major that will become your career for the rest of your life, you've basically entered adulthood. You're gonna have to put yourself out there, get involved, study harder than you ever have before, and you're going to make and lose friends faster than high school just flew by. Sometimes these transitions don't come easy and it's all going to be okay, that's what the fellows are for and if you ever need help writing your story, reaching out to a fellow can be the first step.
Hobbies/Interests:
Some of my hobbies include photography, running, working out, starting way too many shows than what I can keep up with, polyglot, Bollywood enthusiast, science enthusiast.

You may be nervous at first, but you will be just fine. Meet new people, enjoy yourself, get involved, but don't forget that the college experience is all about trying different things and getting to know yourself as an individual. There will be times where you'll feel overwhelmed and stressed out, but stay determined and don't hesitate to talk to people.
Hobbies/Interests:
I love reading, sometimes I like to free write, listen to music, dance, spend time with family and friends. I like to play basketball and I also sing a little. I love interacting with people and getting involved in the community. I am part of the Douglass Hall Council, ACH Quad Connections, the SBU Bhangra team, and I am an intern with Mosquitoes Be Gone LLC. Advice for First-Year Students:
Try to find a balance with yourself and everything you do. Be yourself, but also be self-aware when you interact with others. Try to push yourself towards new goals, but also remember to look back on past accomplishments to better assess your growth. Express your thoughts, but also keep an open mind so you can enhance your identity with other people’s ideas. I know this may seem like a daunting challenge, but I believe everyone should try to balance their personalities with their actions in order to mature into successful adults. Also try to be flexible with yourself and your time management. While daily routines help in managing your activities, you should still prepare for unpredictable changes ranging from your personal interests to the weather.
Hobbies/Interests:
I like to listen to music, watch independent and foreign movies and anime, and write poetry. I am also a member of the Accounting Society, Animated Perspectives, and Spoke the Thunder. I sometimes like to read books and news articles and play video games in my free time.

Advice for First-Year Students:
Starting your freshman year of college is starting a fresh academic slate. I wasn't in the top percentile of my graduating class in high school but now I am on the Dean's List and was inducted into Sigma Beta Honor Society and The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. This proves that anything is possible when you set your mind to it. Socially, you should find that balance between your studies and your social life. Get involved, join that club you thought was interesting, become friends with the person next to you in that huge math lecture, and most importantly, go to school everyday with an open mind. As a commuter, I thought I would never make any friends. Today, I can honestly say that I feel as if I have more friends now than I did in high school. Put yourself out there, try your hardest, don't be afraid to ask questions and you are golden! Good luck in your first year of college, class of 2020!
Hobbies/Interests:
When I'm not in class or studying in the library, you can find me at my ballet studio in St. James where I spend every evening. I am a classically trained ballet dancer since the age of 3 and, as a result, I have been in many performances and productions. Besides dancing, I work at Petsmart, I do aerial acrobatics, I am an artist, I was on the Belly Dance Team, and I love to play tennis!

Get out of your comfort zone (which I know can be super scary) and embrace the amazing things this campus has to offer you, from academics and advising to clubs and organizations, there is never a dull moment here at Stony Brook! There is something here for everyone, including you, and all you have to do is put yourself out there, even just a little, in order to make Stony Brook feel more like home. The initial awkwardness will be worth it, trust me. And just in case you were wondering... What's a Seawolf? I'M A SEAWOLF... and so are you! Good luck and show us what amazing students, community builders, leaders, and individuals you all are!
Hobbies/Interests:
I am kinda obsessed with food (but really, who isn't?)... I also really enjoy planning programs and helping with events here on campus, and yes, this is a personal invitation to join me at any and every event I am working on! Netflix is always great (Supernatural is life) and I love to just hang out with friends whenever I can!

Advice for First-Year Students:
You will feel overwhelmed at first with finding the balance of schoolwork and making time for activities you enjoy, but do not sacrifice one for the other. Both are very important to not drive yourself crazy. To have the balance of both, you are going to need to apply a concept that will be spoken about over and over again throughout your academic career: time-management. Time-management is something that will be difficult to manage, but as your time at Stony Brook continues, strive to improve that skill. You never know how precious 30 minutes or an hour is until you have experienced life in college!

Welcome to Stony Brook! My best advice to each and everyone one of you would be to get involved on campus! This is a huge school however, as you become connected to more and more people across campus, you will begin to realize it's not so big after all. The possibilities are endless in regards to getting involved on campus- whether it be joining a club, a performance group, or just reaching out to a classmate to grab lunch after class, you will begin to find your place here very quickly! Best of luck to all you Seawolves and enjoy your first year here at Stony Brook!
Hobbies/Interests:
When I'm not studying for classes, I love listening to music, performing in music ensembles, and watching musical performances. Here at Stony Brook, I am a member of the University Orchestra. Broadway musicals are at the top of my list, making New York City my go to place! Aside from music, I love to travel and explore new places. I am also an avid coffee drinker and can almost always be caught with a coffee cup at hand!

Advice for First-Year Students:
Don't be afraid to talk to your professors! I know they may seem intimidating, but they are actually very nice and extremely helpful outside of the classroom. Office hours are also a great tool for getting to know your professors personally. They could be a great future resource for getting letters of recommendation and job opportunities! Also, do not be afraid to go to academic advising to ask for help. Every new college student is bound to have questions, and asking is the best way to learn.
Hobbies/Interests:
I love anything that has to do with being in the outdoors, whether it be camping, hiking, kayaking, or zip-lining. I also love to crochet and knit in my free time as it is great to de-stress in a fun way. I also love going to random events on campus that I normally wouldn't go to. You'd be surprised how meeting different people might open new opportunities! In addition, I love to sing and act and am a proud member of the Stony Brook Camerata singers.

Advice for First-Year Students:
College is a whole new environment and its totally fine that you're unsure of things. Its completely normal to feel like life is so hectic and there's no where to run, but there is. Take advantage of all the opportunities on campus because they will be your saving grace when you are struggling. Also, don't sweat that the friends you make during orientation aren't your friends during finals. Making friends in the first semester of college is hard, but it becomes easier when you meet people that are interested in the same things as you are.
Hobbies/Interests:
I enjoy the outdoors and hanging with friends, but I love to spend some evenings alone binge watching Netflix or YouTube videos.

Stony Brook is an amazing place with more opportunities than one can imagine. There is so much to explore and you will have so many great experiences here, whether it be making friends with people from all over the world, finally figuring out a major that fits you, or building connections with people who share interests with you. There is a place for everyone here on campus as it is home to many communities, so don't sweat the little things and get ready for an experience of a lifetime.
Hobbies/Interests:
I don't know what to put for this. I guess I would like to cook but I don't really know if I'm any good at it, so all I do is watch those 30 second videos on Facebook. I also take photos (Follow Me @stephan_ungar)

Advice for First-Year Students:
One piece of advice that had a huge impact on my my first year at Stony Brook was to compliment other people if I liked something about them. I entered this school a very shy human being and this tip really encouraged me open up in a positive way. Just complimenting others on a piece of clothing that they were wearing or on something interesting they had said during class could really encourage them to open up to you and vice versa. Personally, having a stranger compliment me is one of the nicest feelings and gives a great first impression.
Hobbies/Interests:
Besides the majority of my time being spent eating or sleeping, I enjoy doing a wide range of things. I enjoy several independent hobbies such as photography, drawing and figure skating, besides the more obvious/well known ones such as communications (just talking in general, really) or traveling. Oh, and I'm an avid cat lover - even though dogs have somehow found their way into my heart too.

Get involved on campus! You'll meet so many new people and gain new experiences! During my freshman year I became very involved on campus. Advice for First-Year Students:
Ultimately, your college experience is going to be what you make of it. You'll be in a new environment with classes that are grueling and no friends yet to share the pain with. It's very easy to retreat in on yourself but you have got to make the choice to not let that happen. Most importantly, as a freshman realize that all the people around you are going through the same things. You are not alone.
Hobbies/Interests:
I like reading and writing and going for walks and eating and sleeping and listening to music and spending time with friends and giving time to myself. But more often than not I usually just end up watching Netflix ....
