Please don't confine yourself to your room. There are so many adventures to be found. Join clubs and do not hesitate to take part in the multitude of activities that are available here on campus. Explore different interests and discover your passion.

Advice for First-Year Students:
As cliche as this may sound, don't be afraid to say hi. Stony Brook University not only offers us a massive campus with countless opportunities, but also privileges us with a diverse range of students, each with his or her unique story and talents. You will always find your niche so long as you make the first step and meet new people.
Hobbies/Interests:
Anyone who knows me well will immediately think "soccer" if talking about my interests. I am a soccer addict, at least in the sense of the game itself, rather than the player ratings, cup history, or other trivial statistics. My other interests are skiing, Taekwondo, and FOOD. I love reading, learning, and having deep philosophical discussions. I am also a member of the Bhangra and the Rasawalas dance teams.
Undergraduate College:

Major:
Biochemistry. Pre-med track.
Hometown:
Botswana, Southern Africa
Advice for First-Year Students:
One of the most important things that I have learned in my college life is to always try to maintain a positive attitude towards EVERYTHING! The truth is you will have good and very frustrating days. Always try to focus your energy on finding the solution to your problems and try to focus less on your misfortunes. Instead of stressing about a bad grade, find out what you did wrong or didn't do, then build on that to get a better grade next time. Finally, don't forget to always relax and have fun!
Hobbies/Interests:
I love chilling with my friends at the end of the week and just talking about life and our experiences of the week. Also, I have recently fallen in love with the arts. I took a jazz dance class, saw my first Broadway show and I'm looking forward to explore many more forms of art.

Advice for First-Year Students:
College is what you make of it. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and meet new people. Get involved on campus and join clubs or sports teams. Find out what you are interested in. Experience new things. Step outside your comfort zone. College is all about discovering yourself and what you want to do with your life. Time management is key. You have to make sure that you balance your schoolwork, activities, and time to hang out with friends. Take advantage of your time here because four years will go by quickly.
Hobbies/Interests:
One of my passions is cars. Ever since I was little, I would collect matchbox cars and try to learn as much about them as I could. In my free time, I enjoy watching television and hanging out with friends. My favorite television shows are the American Horror Story series and Orange is the New Black. I enjoy hiking, skiing, bike riding, playing tennis and soccer, and just being outside. I have a passion for medicine and I am planning to graduate and go on to medical school so that I can become a doctor and help others.

Jo Chen
Major:
Mechanical Engineering
Hometown:
Buffalo, NY
Advice for First-Year Students:
My dad always tells me "7+1>8". That is, 7 hours of studying, plus one hour of relaxing, is more than eight hours of studying. That is not to be taken literally. Learning how to manage your time between work and play will be the best thing you can do for yourself on a college campus. Study for that exam starting the week before! Do that homework! But...Do turn up the music and dance around your room (but do turn down for exams and if you live in Stimson because you know, 24/7 quiet)! Do get some ice cream at Dunkin Donuts at 12AM after finishing that paper! College should never be strictly studying or strictly socializing. Your brain won't do well with an overdose of either. "7+1>8".
Hobbies/Interests:
ASA Dance Team, free food, Chinese traditional dance, going to Baskin and Robbins, Model UN, sleeping, lounging, eating, the Internet, robotics, perpetual motion machines, playing the oboe, playing the English horn, playing music, Wang Center food, feeding the fish, feeding friends ("Fish are friends not food." -Bruce from Finding Nemo), having fun, and smiling.

Major:

Advice for First-Year Students:
Expand your interests! The school has so much to offer, and by taking advantage of these opportunities you'll discover interests you didn't know you had. Make sure to have a good balance of work and play - school will be tough, and you'll have to work a lot more than you're used to. That's why it's important to balance it out with activities you enjoy in order to relax.
Hobbies/Interests:
I have always been interested in the arts. I have taken ballet since I was 4, and always participated in theatre at school. I also enjoy reading, it's nice to be able to forget yourself or your stresses for a little while in a good story. I am also passionate about politics, and having been involved in the YMCA Youth and Government program has taught me about the legislative process and the impact of your voice in this country.

You'll meet lots of new interesting people, build a network and have fun too.

Lindsay DeFilippis
Major:
Linguistics
Minor:
Korean Studies
Hometown:
Newport, NH
Advice for First-Year Students:
As a freshman, it's hard to get used to the idea of being an adult. You suddenly have a lot of responsibilities and your parents aren't around to help you out. Don't be afraid to ask questions and get help. That's what the faculty and staff are there for. There are no stupid questions, and the faster you realize that, the easier it will be for you to succeed on your own. Find a professor, RA, or Fellow you can trust or go to when you need advice. Transitioning to college life is tough, but you don't have to do it alone.
Hobbies/Interests:
Here at SBU, I am a member of the Linguistics Club, Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship, and I am an active member of my building's E-board. I like all kinds of art, especially painting. I'm a big reader, and I would be lost without my Kindle. I think I'm pretty good at singing, but I would be too shy to get up on a stage. I enjoy learning about languages, and I hope to one day be fluent in Korean. One of the things on my bucket list is to learn how to paddle board, because it sounds like a lot of fun.

The first semester can be overwhelming, but know that you are not alone and that people are available on campus to help you when you're struggling with adjusting to college life. Advice for First-Year Students:
My first and most important piece of advice I can give you is be yourself! Get involved in the various clubs, sports, and activities here at Stony Brook University. You may never know where you'll meet a new friend and a new connection. College is what you make of it and the experiences will define you and how you go forward in life.

I enjoy reading historical fiction books (Percy Jackson Series, Robert Langdon Series) and love TV and movies. These typical things are just some of things about me and you can always talk to me and get to know me better.

Advice for First-Year Students:
Stay organized! It can be easy to lose track of your priorities when you can’t remember what they are. It’s important to both focus on your work and to get involved on campus. Use a planner or calendar, and be sure to check your email daily. It makes it a lot easier to balance work with your social life, and can help you to avoid a Netflix-induced procrastination.
Hobbies/Interests:
Being actively involved in clubs, exploring new places, eating, sleeping, volunteering, going to the gym, hanging out with friends, and listening to music.

Advice for First-Year Students:
Get involved! Everyone says this, but it cannot be more true. Getting involved in things that interest you will put you on the fast track to finding friends with similar interests, as well as building your resume and making this campus seem much smaller than it actually is. However, remember that studies come first! Stony Brook is a school with lots of difficult classes, but they are very manageable if you stay focused.
Hobbies/Interests:
I am a member of the Spirit of Stony Brook marching and pep bands, as a french horn player, as well as the University Wind Ensemble, as a bassoon player, so you could say music is a passion of mine. While I'm not playing or listening to music, I like to hang out and watch movies or catch a hockey game. I'm from Massachusetts, outside of Boston, so naturally I am a big Bruins fan!
