Meet the 2016-2017 GLS Fellows!

Name:
Krystalle Lyons
Major:
Psychology, B.A.; Asian and Asian American Studies
Hometown:
Queens, NY
Advice for First-Year Students:
Coming to a new setting is always intimidating, but the campus is super friendly. I met my first friend at an event. I made a comment on the food options there and we just hit it off after that. If you're open to the new experiences and get involved you'll start enjoying yourself even more. Also, if you have a question or concern don't be afraid to ask questions or have a meeting with someone. There are lots of great faculty here who want to help students, but they can't read minds.
Hobbies/Interests:
Interest wise, psychology and Japanese culture/language are probably tied at number one. However, if I have free time I can most likely be found reading a book of the supernatural/fantasy genres. I also like to indulge in k-pop.

Advice for First-Year Students:
College gives you an opportunity to redefine yourself, so don't be shy and try to partake in activities that you are new to. You have four years, try to discover things about yourself and meet as many people you humanly can. But most importantly, outline all your papers, and footnote everything.
Hobbies/Interests:
I enjoy ice skating, snowboarding and skiing. 99.9999% chance of me enjoying an activity that contains snow and ice.

Whether it be academics or personal issues, Stony Brook equips you to have everything available to you. And if you really need someone, don't forget you have us (as in the GLS Fellows)!
Hobbies/Interests:
I come from the most diverse county in the world, Queens, and attended Townsend Harris High School in Flushing. I enjoy basketball to watch/play, but also have a great eye for fashion and love to shop. I've had a lot of different interests that geared my direction to what I wanted to become. My dream job as a child was to become a pilot or a sports TV commentator, but I think I'll stick to becoming a pharmacist.

Advice for First-Year Students:
Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! There are countless opportunities to take advantage of at Stony Brook so don't hold yourself back. Getting involved in campus clubs or events might lead you to a new hobby. Even a simple thing such as saying "hi" to the people who sit around you in class might open up the path to making new friends. Don't shy away from taking different classes to explore your interests. Your first year will go quicker than you might imagine!
Hobbies/Interests:
I love listening to music, trying out new recipes, looking at art, planning road trips, taking walks around my neighborhood, discovering new places to travel, and learning new languages and cultures.

Advice for First-Year Students:
Time management is definitely important for college. Learn to make the time for academics, clubs, friends, and yourself! If you need help studying some material, there are plenty of resources on campus to help you out, such as office hours and the learning centers. You can also make a study group with people in your class. Getting involved on campus is definitely important. It allows you to branch out and connect with people of similar interests. Definitely have fun and hang out with your friends, but if you know you have a lot of work to do, then be sure to make the best choices. Always make sure you have the time to take care of yourself, because that is also so, so important! So basically, time management is key.
Hobbies/Interests:
I love drawing!! I used to play violin and piano, so I appreciate orchestral music I've gotten super into makeup lately. Sometimes I write. I'm also pretty passionate on social issues. I love to learn about different cultures and languages. I really love history, and will declare that as my minor soon enough.

Advice for First-Year Students:
I'd advise first year students to not overwhelm themselves. Take your classes, make mistakes, and use the first semester or year of college to really get an idea of what you want to get out of your time at Stony Brook. Then it'll be easier and a lot less stressful when you want to meet with advisors, choose classes, and look into resources for the future.
Hobbies/Interests:
I enjoy reading, dogs, and being involved where I can make an impact. I am a member of PSA (Psychology Student Alliance) and the Autism Awareness Club. I am also considering a major in philosophy.

Advice for First-Year Students:
A significant piece of advice I have for first-year students is to not stress! It sounds silly to say, but people generally spend more time worrying than working. If the time used to worry was spent working, a lot more work would get done. Try to relax as best as you can!
Hobbies/Interests:
My favorite way to relieve stress is to workout. Nothing blows off steam like lifting weights! I also love listening to music, my current favorites are Halsey and Magic Man, but I'm a long time fan of The Killers and The 1975. I love rock concerts and festivals, but I have a weak spot for orchestra concerts and classical/romantic music. Ultimately, I love meeting new people! If you ever see me on campus, although it might not appear like it (because I am so engrossed in my music), I would love to strike up a conversation and get to know you!

Advice for First-Year Students:
Don't let yourself be overwhelmed by the new experiences, but don't slack off! The most important thing in your first year is figuring out the right balance of academics and socializing, and it might take some time to figure out! Don't panic if things don't go smoothly at first! Also, getting involved on campus is one of the best things you can do in your first year, no matter how you choose to do so!
Hobbies/Interests:
Aside from being a diehard Knicks fan, I also enjoy playing recreational basketball. I also love to write and debate, with an active interest in politics, stemming from my involvement with Youth and Government in high school. I am also a lover of all kinds of music, and am always willing to give new things a chance!

Advice for First-Year Students:
It's okay to mess up a little here and there. It's important to learn how to not mess up again as badly in the future. Talk to people, use some of the resources around you! You'd better believe that there are people who want to help you, but it's up to you to start. There is always a way to get involved. Get out there and go to some clubs, go to presentations, ask the faculty about opportunities, just do something! Take the bull by the horns, because now you're in the rodeo! To hang on, I like to remember something a stranger said to me on a bus once: "How you live your life each day is how you live your life." So, why are you still reading this? Go be great!
Hobbies/Interests:
Talk about myself? Well, I like to run whenever I have too many assignments to do. I am an Eagle Scout of Troop 414, Center Moriches, and that has made me enjoy bare-bones camping. I'm obsessed with those elastic-type bracelets that have a little message on the outside. You know? The ones you get for doing a fundraiser or going to some event. Besides that, I like to learn about why things do what they do. I also enjoy learning about other people, to remind me just how different we are. Did you get all that?

Seize any opportunity that comes your way and always prioritize the things that will give you a better and brighter future.
Hobbies/Interests:
I am a cupcake enthusiast who never actually eats anything she bakes. I love to do martial arts and have random dance sessions in between intense study session. My stress reliever? A good book, a soft and mellow playlist, or some spoken word on Youtube!

Advice for First-Year Students:
College may come off as intimidating but that's why we're here; college is about shaping your identity and learning to become more independent and effective in your academic endeavors. Again, it sounds overwhelming but there are pros/cons to it. For instance, going to class is an obligation expected upon yourself, your teachers won't nag you about it, your grade however may suffer instead. Understand, you are not alone and this is precisely why we are here to help. Depending on how privileged you were from high school, your transition here may feel not bad to intense, but do not fear, all of us had to go through this transition, you will go through it as well and we will be there to support you on the way. =]
Hobbies/Interests:
Typically you'd expect sports, music, movies, but I actually enjoy following up on the events happening across the planet, specifically American foreign policy, but of course I love learning about different cultures/ideas so watching foreign news gives a different insight on the world as these events affect us all. I love engaging in discussion on any controversial topic even if I may not know much of it, I enjoy healthy dialogue between contrasting sides, you are more than welcome to share ideas with me or ask my opinion :) Other than that, I also love hanging out with friends, don't be shy to approach me if you see me on campus!
