Definitely keep on top of your responsibilities and make sure you are well organized. Have an agenda to keep track of things you should do during the day and a calendar for future dates that you should remember. Most important of all is don't stress out and don't forget to have fun here and there. Although your classes should be one of your top priorities, you should also remember to be social, have fun, and relax so that your stress doesn't make you miserable. The transition is the hardest part, so make sure you stay on top of things and have fun!

First year students! Prioritize your responsibilities from the beginning, get stuff done early so you're not stressing out later! It's the worst feeling when you're not prepared for an exam because of some time management issue beforehand. So please, make lists, organize a calendar, set reminders for yourself. I promise you, after making sure you've got everything organized and done in a timely fashion, it will be so much easier to find time to socialize, relax, and have fun.

Advice for First-Year Students:
I would say try to find a balance between friends and classwork. For most students, academics come first but after a long week of classes, homework, lab reports, and exams it is great to have a groups of friends to watch a movie with or even just hang out. Classwork gets tough, but a good group of friends can keep you sane.
Hobbies/Interests:
If it is the spring, fall, or summer I love to be outside. I like to play Frisbee and soccer with my friends. I like to swim and go to the beach. If it is winter and it is too cold to go outside I like to listen to music, read, and hang out with my friends. On campus, I am a member of the Biochem society, my building's e-board, and a member of the iGem team.

My advice for incoming freshmen is to take advantage of everything Stony Brook has to offer! There's a multitude of clubs and activities for almost every interest. Do something you love or try something new! In addition, stay ahead of your classwork. Many professors give at least a week to complete each assignment, but if you leave work to the last minute it is very easy to be overwhelmed with multiple assignments with similar due dates.
