Don't be too intimidated to be talkative and outgoing starting from the moment you get here! An outgoing and positive attitude makes all the difference in how you'll like your time here at Stony Brook! I didn't think this was a big deal when I first got here, but it certainly is. Having a solid network of friends and professional relationships with professors and TAs is incredibly helpful.

TL;DR: Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone; you'd be surprised to discover what you're capable of. :) When you get to college, your number one priority is your education. As tough as it may be to dedicate nearly all your time to your coursework, don't forget to take care of yourself and to reward yourself for working so diligently. Also, there's nothing wrong with asking for help. No one is going to judge you for wanting to understand something or for wanting to know more. To be honest, others don't have the time to judge you because they are overwhelmed with their own things. While you work hard to keep your mind fit, remember to keep your body fit too. (The "Freshman 15" is real so be sure to avoid it.) If something doesn't make you entirely happy, change it! You know what makes you happy and what doesn't, so don't be shy about going for what you love. Feel free to experiment too! Go for something that you wouldn't ever think about doing. Overall, I'd say my overall advice would be work hard, play hard, ask for help when it is needed, and discover things. There's so much to discover on campus and so many things to do. It makes it seem like every day is an adventure. Be the best you you can be and enjoy your college experience while you can. Welcome to Stony Brook, freshmen! :)

Advice for First-Year Students:
DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE YOUR CLASSES! Just because you did well in calc or chem or physics or any other classes in high school does NOT mean you are going to do well in these classes in college. Classes in college go by really fast so if you are struggling in any way, seek help (professor's office hours, friends, CAPS, etc.) If you don't do as well as you expected to do on your first exams do not let that get to you! Take it as a learning lesson and you will improve on your following exams. Work hard in your classes but don't forget to have fun!
Hobbies/Interests:
Basketball - I'm usually at the rec center 3-4 times a week so come by if you want to play! Badminton - I am in the badminton club on campus, stop by the rec center if you are interested! Netflix - Dexter, Breaking Bad, White Collar, How I Met Your Mother

Advice for First-Year Students:
Hello there! :) Hopefully you're a bit settled in right now and all is well. I do have some advice to give you based on the horrifying mistakes I've done and learned from: 1. Manage your time wisely. Yup. That's right. Stop procrastinating And yes, Facebook and Reddit (don't forget League) are included in that. Seriously, you'll thank me later. 2. Speaking of time, spend more time sleeping. Being well rested goes a long way, especially when it comes to staying awake in long lectures or when studying for exams. 3. Don't be afraid to ask for help!!!!!!! Too many students are afraid to ask for help, for fear of being looked down upon or singled out. Students and faculty alike are willing to help you in any way they can! Professors aren't robots that hand you work to do and give you grades. They are human beings and are willing to help you every step of the way. They even have office hours, where they allocate a certain amount of time during the week solely dedicated to helping you. If you're feeling stressed out and need someone to talk to, find friends or talk to a staff member at the CPO (Center for Prevention and Outreach). Go outside (yes, you can't stay inside forever). Make friends. Participate in fun activities. Learn new things and have fun doing it. These four years are going to be one of the most important four years of our life. And it only happens once in a lifetime. So, might as well have fun doing it! I have so much more to say, but I think I've already exceeded some wort of limit by now. Good luck, and I wish you all the best of luck! -Norman
Hobbies/Interests:
I'm a pretty boring person but here goes: I like to work on anything related to CS. I'm more of an introvert, but I try to open up as much as I can. Thus, I like to participate in activities with my friends.Furthermore, I like to spend most of my time helping people whenever I can. Whether it be academics or emotional support, I try to help out as often as I can. It's just something I enjoy doing. But I still think I don't do enough. There's always room for improvement. :)

Advice for First-Year Students:
If you have a time management or procrastination problem like me do your best to fix that as quickly as possible. Just remember that it is an ongoing effort. You probably won't be able fix it instantly, it is something you have to gradually work towards. If you find yourself falling into old habits don't think of it like you failed, be happy because you recognized it and make a change. Just hold on, you will get the hang of it and things will get better.
Hobbies/Interests:
I enjoy video games and computer programing but I also like outdoor activities as well. I love Frisbee, and I go to quidditch practice. I have been trying to go to the gym regularly and I want to get into mountain climbing and learn a martial art.

Don't get overwhelmed by your first midterm! Seek for help! And it's okay if you mess up! It will get better! Be aware of the resources the campus has to offer, there are A LOT! ALWAYS talk to an adviser before you drop/swap a class or anything important. Get involved in campus! But that doesn't mean you should party all the time. Don't be afraid to go to office hours, professors are most likely willing to help and they are not as intimidating as you thought! I think what's the most important is to respect others, remember the golden rule: treat others like how you want to be treated!
