Name:
Nishat Ananya
Major:
Biology; Sociology; Pre-Health Track
Hometown:
Bronx, NY
Advice for First-Year Students:
Get involved and ask questions! On the second week of school, I went to a job fair and signed up to become a tour guide while I knew nothing about the campus. Few weeks later, not only have I made friends through this job opportunity, but also learned where things are located here on campus! And don't be shy/afraid to ask questions! Do NOT wait until the night before an exam to start studying!! Plan ahead and balance out your schedule and daily activities.
Hobbies/Interests:
I love food! I also enjoy hanging out with friends and fooling around occasionally. I either read or listen to music till I fall asleep. Late night walks while listening to music is amazing and by far my most favorite hobby! Did I mention I'm a shopaholic?!

Advice for First-Year Students:
Don't be afraid! College is a new beginning for everyone where things are unfamiliar and scary. It's best to do things at your own pace but don't forget to put yourself out there and take advantage of the opportunities on campus. Good luck!
Hobbies/Interests:
My day begins with a caramel macchiato from Starbucks which keeps me vibrant throughout the day. I enjoy baking and cooking yummy things. I love learning about different cultures and getting to know people from diverse backgrounds. In my free time I like to sing and dance to my favorite music or watch the newest show on Netflix. I also like watching horror movies, especially in the middle of the night.

Advice for First-Year Students:
Don't be too hard on yourself. Any new experience is going to come with its challenges and some days are going to be better than others. Remember that everyone is going through the same thing and that it is okay to ask for help . . . and for coffee.
Hobbies/Interests:
Besides my passion for studying the universe, I love music! I play clarinet in the Spirit of Stony Brook Marching Band and I play guitar. And, fun fact, I can juggle!

Advice for First-Year Students:
One of the hardest things that I encountered was my fear to ask for help. I wanted to be independent and do everything myself, which made me blind to the resources that could help me.
Hobbies/Interests:
I absolutely love baking, whether it is following recipes on tasty or just baking out of a box of mix. I love going on Pinterest and doing the DIY arts and crafts projects to help myself destress and put my mind to peace.

Advice for First-Year Students:
My advice for first-year students is to always keep your options open. As freshmen, you don't have to decide everything now. This is your chance to explore different majors, clubs, and absolutely anything you are curious about. Don't be afraid to try new things and enjoy your first year.
Hobbies/Interests:
Swimming, singing, playing games (I love all types but I prefer indie horror games) and shopping.

Advice for First-Year Students:
Take advantage of your professor's office hours and your TAs. It may seem daunting at first, but the vast majority of them are passionate about what they're doing, and will be willing to help. Also, know your limits. It's okay to not get a perfect score on a test or a project, but if you feel like you're over your head, talk to someone or assess yourself to see if the class is right for you. Expand the scope of what you want to learn to things outside of your major or things you know you're good at. Learn stuff! Have fun! Be awesome!
Hobbies/Interests:
I love teaching and learning, primarily to share my passions with other people or to broaden the things I'm passionate about. I like to help out wherever I can, whether that be tutoring, baking for my suitemates, or listening to people who need to talk stuff out. If you need to know where the best food is, where the sweetest study spots are, or need some new music suggestions, I'm your person.

Advice for First-Year Students:
The most important thing I can tell you is to get involved. Find organizations that support you and what you love, and just go for it. Don't be afraid to reach outside your comfort zone, to meet new people, or to run for a leadership position, even as a freshman. If you attack anything with the right attitude, you can make it happen. Your college experience is entirely what you make of it, so get out there and make it yours.
Hobbies/Interests:
I play flute in the university's marching band, and I'm also an editor for Young Investigators Review, a science research journal on campus. I love to read, bake, and spend lots of time outside.

Don't be afraid to open up your choices! Always be open to change, college is the time to find yourself as a student and as an individual. Meet new people, explore new interests, and if you feel the need to change your major, don't feel ashamed. Even if you planned to do something all your life, you might find something else you like better here, so always look and follow your interests and keep an open mind and heart to it all!

Advice for First-Year Students:
Try new things, college is a time in one's life where they should not be afraid to get outside their comfort zone. Stony Brook has a great number of diverse clubs and classes for new students to join. It is almost impossible for one not to find something that peaks their interest. Some students go through college going from the classes to their dorms but that's not how college is supposed to be experienced.
Hobbies/Interests:
I have a variety of interests and hobbies. I have a great passion for chemistry and I am a member of the American Chemical Society chapter for Stony Brook. I also really like playing video games and just hanging out with my friends.

Be organized, know your deadlines, and do not procrastinate! It is very easy to lose track of time with more spaced out schedules as compared to high school! Do not lose track of time, I highly recommend using Google Calendar to organize all the times of your classes, important appointments, events, and club meetings! :))

Advice for First-Year Students:
Really try to get involved on campus. There are so many clubs and organizations ranging over a wide variety of interests, and each one is a great way to meet new people and make a really big school seem smaller. Getting involved helps make you feel like a member of community, and offers a release from academic work.
Hobbies/Interests:
I love music, dance, video games, science, and baking. I'm a member of the Stony Brook Marching Band, the iGEM synthetic biology research team, and a DJ at WUSB FM. I'll be an RA in Benedict starting in the fall, and in my downtime you can find me watching classic movies, listening to music, and baking cookies.

The pressure of college may be overwhelming, so keep your schedule simple the first semester. It's okay to take a break here and there to explore the other opportunities college has to offer. There are events, shows, and exhibitions happening every week on campus. It is essential to have a social life, not only to have fun, but also because networking comes in handy when it comes to looking for jobs. Most importantly, sleep well and stay hydrated!

Advice for First-Year Students:
Don't think that college is all about studying and work there are so many clubs and organizations on campus you can surely find something that interests you. Also take some courses which aren't part of your major so you can find what really interests you and hey, you might find a new major you like or want to pursue a double major. Explore the campus, do new things, make new friends. Finally enjoy the time you have at Stony Brook!
Hobbies/Interests:
My main hobby is to cooking/baking, I do it even when I'm on campus. Its a stress reliever for me because I'm able do something I enjoy after taking a chem or math test (which believe me causes a lot of stress). I also just like interacting and talking with my friends and people in general. Sometimes I will go into my RA's office randomly just to talk to them (and no that's not weird many students do that).
